About the word "codependency"
What people mean by it
Codependency is not a formal diagnosis. The word grew out of work with families affected by addiction, and it is now used more widely for a pattern of putting another person's needs, moods or problems ahead of your own, so consistently that your own needs go unmet.
People describe it in different ways: finding it hard to say no, feeling responsible for how others feel, staying in the role of carer or fixer, or losing track of what you want. It can come up with partners, parents, adult children, friends or colleagues.
What a therapist may look at

Questions people ask
Is codependency a diagnosis?
No. It is not listed as a separate diagnosis in the main diagnostic manuals. It is a widely used description of a relationship pattern, and therapists use the word in slightly different ways.
Do I need to be in a relationship to look for this kind of help?
No. Therapists here list codependency alongside topics such as self-esteem, family background and loneliness, and people bring these patterns from many kinds of relationships, including with parents, adult children and friends.
How are therapists chosen for this site?
Every therapist listed here includes codependency among the focus areas on their profile. A listed focus area is the therapist's own description of their work, not a certification.
Is this a crisis service?
No. If you or someone else is in danger, contact emergency services. Crisis lines for the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia are listed at the foot of every page.
